Custom Return Address Stamps: The Complete Buyer's Guide

June 10, 2026 2 min read

A custom return address stamp is one of those purchases that takes about 60 seconds to make and then makes your life noticeably easier for years. But with so many options available, it helps to know what to look for before you buy.

Self-Inking vs Wood Handle: Which Is Right for You?

Self-Inking Address Stamps

Self-inking stamps are the most popular choice. The ink pad is built into the stamp body, which re-inks the die automatically with every impression. No separate ink pad is needed. For anyone stamping more than a handful of envelopes at a time, self-inking is the practical choice. Our self-inking address stamps are rated for 10,000 or more impressions per ink fill.

Wood Handle Address Stamps

Wood handle stamps require a separate ink pad but give you the freedom to choose any ink color. They suit those who want to match their stamp color to specific stationery. Browse our wood handle address stamps for available designs.

What Size Should You Choose?

Most return address stamps come in one of two standard sizes:

  • Rectangle stamps (approx. 7/8" x 2-3/8") are the standard choice for most addresses. They fit comfortably on a standard envelope in the top left corner or on the back flap.
  • Round stamps (approx. 1-5/8" diameter) are more decorative and work beautifully as a back flap seal, particularly for wedding invitations.

Popular Uses for Return Address Stamps

  • Everyday mail: bills, thank you notes, birthday cards, holiday cards
  • Wedding invitations: stamp outer envelopes, inner envelopes and RSVP card envelopes
  • Business correspondence: professional-looking return addressing without commercial printing costs
  • Holiday cards: get through a large card list in a fraction of the time
  • Moving announcements: update your address and stamp the announcement envelopes simultaneously

Address Stamp vs Address Embosser

For an elevated alternative, an address embosser creates a raised impression with no ink. It looks particularly striking on the back flap of formal envelopes. Many people use both: a stamp for RSVP and inner envelopes, and an embosser for the outer envelope back flap.
