Embosser Orientation: Which Way Should Your Design Face?

June 09, 2026 3 min read

One of the most common questions we receive from first-time embosser buyers is about orientation — which way should the design face? It is a genuinely confusing topic because the embosser die works differently from a regular stamp. Here is everything you need to know.

How Does an Embosser Work?

An embosser has two metal dies — a top die (concave) and a bottom die (convex). When you squeeze the handles, the paper is pressed between the two dies, creating a raised impression. Because the paper is pressed from both sides simultaneously, the orientation of your artwork matters in a different way than with a rubber stamp.

The Key Rule: Artwork is Submitted as You Want It to Read

Unlike rubber stamps — where the artwork must be mirrored to print correctly — embosser artwork is submitted exactly as you want it to appear in the finished impression. If you want your name to read "Jane Smith" in the emboss, your artwork file should say "Jane Smith" reading left to right, normally.

This is because the embosser presses the paper up from below, creating a raised image that reads correctly when viewed from the front.

Portrait vs Landscape Orientation

Most round embossers (the standard 1-5/8 inch size) are circular, so orientation between portrait and landscape does not apply. However, for oval or rectangular embossers, you will need to specify which direction the longest dimension runs.

When ordering from Pickled Stamps, submit your artwork as a standard image file with the text reading normally — our design team handles the die preparation automatically.

Testing Your Embosser Orientation

When your embosser arrives, do these quick checks:

  1. Test on white paper first. Hold the embossed paper up to a light source. The raised impression should be legible when viewed from the front.
  2. Check the text reads left to right. If your name or address reads backward, contact us immediately — this is rare but can happen.
  3. Check the design is upright. The top of your design (logo, image or text) should be at the 12 o'clock position when you hold the paper normally.

Embosser Placement Tips

For book embossers — place on the bottom corner of the page for a traditional library stamp look, or the inside front cover for a personalised bookplate effect. Our book embossers are designed to fit beautifully in either position.

For address embossers — center on the back flap of the envelope for the most elegant look, or place in the top-left corner of the front as a return address. See our address embosser collection.

For stationery embossers — top center of the page for a letterhead effect, or bottom center for a seal-style finish.

What Size Embosser Do I Need?

Our standard round embosser is 1-5/8 inches in diameter — the most popular size for book stamps and general use. This fits comfortably on a book page without being too large, and is sized to accommodate a name and decorative design comfortably. Larger 2-inch options are available for more detailed designs or longer names.
